What is Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS)?

Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that affects the nerve cells in the body and causes them to release less than normal amounts of a chemical called acetylcholine which affects the muscles. The disease can often cause muscle weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath, as well as other symptoms including joint and muscle pain.

Difficulties Faced by Patients with LEMS:

Patients living with LEMS can experience a variety of different difficulties due to their condition. These include difficulty walking or standing, difficulty climbing stairs, difficulty lifting heavy objects, or difficulty speaking or swallowing. Patients may also have trouble breathing due to weakened chest muscles and abnormal breathing patterns. In addition, some patients suffer from cognitive impairment such as memory loss and confusion. Finally, long-term complications can result in severe muscle and bone pain that can be debilitating for those affected by LEMS.
