What is Motor Neurone Disease?

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that causes the motor neurons in the brain, spinal cord and other areas of the body to malfunction and die. This ultimately leads to muscle weakness, wasting and paralysis. It can affect any individual regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. In addition, MND is also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progressive bulbar palsy and Lou Gehrig’s disease.

What type of difficulties are faced by patients?

Patients with MND often experience physical and psychological difficulties that range from a reduced ability to do everyday tasks such as walking or eating, to feelings of loneliness and isolation due to a lack of mobility or communication problems caused by speech impairment. Other symptoms include breathing difficulties, impaired hand dexterity, loss of bladder/bowel control, difficulty swallowing/eating, slurred speech and cramps. These can be very distressing for patients and their families.
