What is Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS)?
Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a rare condition that affects people who have had polio and is characterised by the re-emergence of muscle weakness, pain, fatigue, and breathing problems. It typically appears 15 to 40 years after the initial onset of polio. PPS commonly affects older adults and can cause significant disabilities.
What Types of Difficulties are Faced by Patients?
Patients with Post-polio Syndrome may experience a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, muscle weakness, joint pain, respiratory difficulties such as shortness of breath, sleep disturbances and depression. In some cases, these symptoms lead to reduced physical activity levels which can further contribute to musculoskeletal degeneration due to disuse atrophy. Additional complications such as difficulty swallowing may also arise due to weakened muscles in the throat.
