Distressed behaviour in dementia can be frightening for the person, family and paid carers. A person may call out, pace, repeat questions, resist support, become upset, try to leave or react strongly to an ordinary request. These actions should not be dismissed as deliberate misbehaviour or treated as a problem to be controlled. The first question is often: what may the person be trying to communicate, and has anything changed?
